Jack
Jack lives an insular life.
Ears loaded with urban hum
Plays games people label trite
Academia flouts the dull one.
Jack lives on South Auckland-side.
Freeway and tar-seal frontiers
Skate symbols cover his hide
He has never touched the sea.
Jack hasn't felt the majesty
Salt and marine magic overpowering
Thus he is drunk on levity
All aspirations left foundering.
Ears loaded with urban hum
Plays games people label trite
Academia flouts the dull one.
Jack lives on South Auckland-side.
Freeway and tar-seal frontiers
Skate symbols cover his hide
He has never touched the sea.
Jack hasn't felt the majesty
Salt and marine magic overpowering
Thus he is drunk on levity
All aspirations left foundering.

Nice. I like the unexpectedness of the phrases, 'loaded with urban hum'... like urban hum is a 'thing'. Also the change from a 2-4 line rhyme to a 1-3, and then the third verse is a 1-3 with near-rhyme on 2&4.
I like the metaphor of drunkeness to illustrate the effect that mind-numbing urban living can have on people.
Thanks Scott. It was inspired when remembering my time in South Auckland, and hearing about kids who'd never crossed the Harbour Bridge.
